Compulsive Behavior

Niko Bellic is a God damned charmer.I had intentions of playing several games to completion before the GTA IV bomb dropped.

I failed.

Sorry Nero and Dante, I’ll finish your emo/insanity story soon. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, hopefully your online modes will function when I get back to you. Burnout: Paradise, I’m sorry but I’ve found another free roaming car game. Keep telling yourselves it’s not your fault. Because it isn’t, it’s my fault. I’m unfaithful.

Yet another example of how Grand Theft Auto has turned me into a monster, I can’t even remain faithful to my hobby!

Which isn’t to say that Grand Theft Auto IV is the only game to grace my glassy gaze. I essentially have two games I’m playing right now. I play GTA at night when I get a chance (which has been irritatingly little). During the day, my passion is The World Ends With You.

It’s almost evil how you are tricked into constantly thinking about the game while you aren’t playing. At times when I would normally be consumed with thinking about all the crazy things I want to try to do in Liberty City I’m concerned with which type of experience my emo pins are getting.

No seriously, I can't read...

This is what my characters look like to me when they talk, and I’m playing the english version…

Crazy story aside, the game mechanics of The World Ends With You (TWEWY, twooie?) alone are enough to engross you. I’m currently typing this with my DS blinking in my pocket in the hopes that I might wander into a strange wireless signal that, you guessed it, will give my emo pins more power.

While I play I’m constantly checking to make sure my character is in fashion and that I’m eating right. In fact, if you didn’t know better you’d think I was talking about a Sims expansion and not a fast paced, anime steeped, action-RPG.

Which is a good thing.

It’s absolutely refreshing to find game mechanics that live in such harmony with a portable system. Walk around in wireless roaming mode: get experience. Turn it off and come back days later: get experience. Actually play the game and have lots of fun: get experience.

It’s almost enough to make me wonder what Niko is gaining while I’m not playing.
